"Damned good read. Spoiler alert.
This one starts with Vicky at her Grandparents destroyed ranch. Its in the Colorado Rockies. Eric Branson had just left to look for horses to continue his search for Megan. Vicky had told him Megan left with Aaron after she finally saw what a loser Gareth was. She told Eric that Gareth, Brett, Colleen and Jeremy had gone after Megan and Aaron.
Her grandparents had opened their home to them all only to have Gareth steal horses, weapons and supplies as they took off after Megan and Aaron. Then men had come and killed her grandparents and burned the house full of supplies down. Vicky hadn't been see but there was nothing she could do.
Eric is an ex Navy SEAL who upon leaving the SEALs had become a private contractor. He had an overpowering desire for combat and was damned good at what he did. He was away more than he was home and this cost him his marriage to Shauna. He had come ashore in Florida and rescued Shauna and her new husband and step son. They had made it to Louisiana and rescued brother Keith. Now Eric is searching for daughter Shauna. One tough row to hoe.
Vicky hid as Gareth, Brett and Jeremy came down the drive on the stolen horses. They dismounted and just looked at the burned ranch house. Then Gareth noticed the two graves covered with stones. He and the other began to look around. Nothing was left of the mountain of supplies his grandparents had in the house so Gareth and Jeremy set off with the stolen rifles to hunt. Once gone Vick decided to take back the stolen horses by simply walking up to Bret. He was amazed to see her and she got the drop on him with the Glock Eric had left her. She then took Tucker, her grandfathers favorite gelding, mounted him bareback and with the reins of the other two she took off. Brett ran into the barn grabbed a rifle and shot at her hitting one of the horses. The two she was leading pulled back and she released the reins and took off on Tucker.
Gareth would pursue Vicky who headed into a box canyon with no way out. Eric would meet up with Shauna in the woods outside the burned ranch house as Jeremey shot and killed Bob Barnham, a man who lived in a cabin completely off the grid. A cabin loaded with supplies and weapons. Eric questions Brett and Jeremy and found out about Gareth's pursuit of Vicky so he headed that way after tying up Brett and Jeremy who were aghast at having killed Bob. Shauna stayed with them.
Vicky turned Tucker loose after tying the rains up on his neck. She then headed to the back of the box canyon. The rifle she took from Brett wasn't loaded. But she still had the Glock. She used it to kill Gareth when he finally caught up with her. Eric arrived and took Vicky to Bob's cabin after meeting up with Shauna. He questioned Brett and Jeremy about how far they had tracked Aaron and Megan. Aaron was a full blooded Apache and they though he was headed to New Mexico and the reservation where he had family. He was a mild mannered man who knew the "old ways" of his people and had kept Gareth and his crew fed on their journey to the ranch house.
Once back at the cabin they buried Bob. Jonathan had a broken leg but both he and Shauna wanted to go with Eric. Eric decided nope. He was going alone. He left in the middle of the night and took two horses. One to ride and one as a pack horse. He knew Shauna would blow her stack at the letter he left. He knew he could travel faster and father on his own.
So begins one damned fine read.
This one has Eric, Vicky, Shauna, Jonathan, Colleen, Aaron, Megan, a group of militia who had his the ranch house, a group of militia who were still where Brett and Jeremy said they were, an Eric who killed one lazy guard and questioned the other before killing him, an Eric who now knows there is a bigger group further South, that was where they must have taken anyone they captured, a Megan who watched Aaron be captured, a Megan who heads for the nearest Army check point to tell her tale, She drew a map and let the Army know exactly where the group took Aaron, The Army attacked the group and Aaron escaped headed for the reservations, the Army took Megan to the gates of the reservation as well and Eric Branson is headed that way as well.
Five Stars."

Five Stars. - The plot of this book, No. 5, Perseverance, was interesting, though there was too much musing and meandering verbiage, as tho to expand the book’s word count. I had read the previous four books some time ago and found them more interesting. But this book was long on uninteresting verbiage and short on post apocalyptic action.
The meandering narrative tended to be a bit confusing. Maybe the author was clear on what was happening, but that may not be the case with the reader.
I downrated the review to three stars, because I was offended by the author’s careless use of words. Specifically, his use of “militia†to describe outlaw marauders, instead of the more correct term of insurgents, or outlaw gangs. Author really should buy a dictionary and look up definitions to be correct.
A militia is a legitimate, lawful organization of civilians who are armed to fight an invasion or insurgency, such as were used in the early days of the American Nation, even tho current radical liberal groups are trying to discredit or misuse the term. But then author does use the term correctly when describing the Apache Reservation defense force. Hmm.
Another was “round of buckshot.†The correct term would be “load of buckshot.†A round is a single cartridge and projectile.
Hopefully author will be more careful on his use of descriptive terms in future books. - I have read all of Scott William's books. I love the survival narrative and the believability of his books. They don't have so much violence that you get sick of it and I love reading about the survival skills.
- From the beginning book to the last adventure the story flows and keeps the reader interest guessing how the main character solves each dilemma they face.
- From the first book through this book it’s been all excitement. Well written! Highly recommend this series. Scott Williams writing gets better with every book
- The Feral Nation Series is a super read. The broad variety of settings and characters gives the reader something to look forward to on every page. I happily recommend it to discerning readers of this genre.
- Scott is a great story teller in the best of Southern traditions. I have read EVERYTHING he has written and will continue to purchase everything he writes! I only wish I could put it down once I start so as not to neglect my work and family!!!😉
